Bio: Marilu Duque

Education is my path to freedom.

Growing up a first-generation American in a low-income household, I saw college as a means to pursue a better life for my family. I started down this path in middle school, when I submitted an essay for a local MLK Jr. “I Have A Dream” speech writing competition. I won a whopping $75 and never looked back! From that point on, I was fascinated by the idea that simply writing prose could take me places beyond my small Central Florida town. I spent most of my formative years reading successful scholarship and college admissions essays, subconsciously identifying patterns, and researching application strategies. Before applying to college myself, I offered guidance to other students applying. During senior year, I was finally able to apply the knowledge I had gained over the past 5 years and was pretty successful. I was accepted to my top choice college, New York University — Tandon School of Engineering, and won over $1 Million in scholarships including the Gates Millennium & Buick Achievers scholarships.

While at NYU, I was an Admissions Ambassador in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions all 4 years. During this time I interviewed over 100 applicants and was offered an Application Reader role upon graduation which I did for 2 years reading over 1000 applications.

Since my time at NYU, I earned my Bachelors of Science in Integrated Digital Media (2019) and went on to complete a Masters of Science in Information (Data Science/ Machine Learning (ML) & Cybersecurity focus) at the University of Michigan (UM), Ann Arbor (2021). In 2021 I received one of the most prestigious European scholarships, the George J. Mitchell Scholarship by the US-Ireland Alliance, to pursue another Masters degree in Ireland. As of 2023, I have earned an M.A. in Criminology (Cybercrime focus) from the Technological University Dublin.

My professional and research experience spans across the private, public, and academic sectors. I have worked with organizations like Synopsys, Mandiant, the United States Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, U.S. Department of State’s Virtual Student Federal Service, NYU, UM, and the iSchool Inclusion Institute. These various research endeavors have led to numerous publications, conference presentations, and awards within the STEM fields. My teaching experience ranges from teaching STEM concepts to a wide range of audiences, from high schoolers to college students and elderly technology users alike. As part of AI4All, I teach AI/ML to college students; at UM I taught AI/ML Ethics; through the Hispanic Heritage Foundation I taught intro to coding to high schoolers in NYC; and through the NYC Google Community Leaders Program I taught the elderly how to use technology.

Apart from working at NYU for 6 years, I also worked for UM Graduate Admissions, been an Application Reader for the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) award and have been a freelance admissions consultant for 10+ years. As a consultant, I have helped students win over $4 Million in scholarships and get into 40+ schools including Carnegie Mellon, Tulane, Cornell, NYU, UM, and many others. With over 10 years of college admission experience, I have a passion for helping others make their educational and career goals a reality!

Outside of academics, I do competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Archery (ranked 3rd in Ireland’s 2022 Indoor Nationals), Kayak, practice lockpicking, take Aerial Ribbon classes, travel the world, and was a volunteer firefighter in Ireland.
