Working with Daniel throughout my college application process has been one of the most helpful and rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.
Our mentorship started during the fall of my junior year in high school, where we worked together to apply to summer programs that I would be interested in. From the onset, his resilience and skill as a consultant showed. He would revise my essays for many competitive programs: MITES from MIT, SAMS from Carnegie Mellon, and YYGS from Yale. And I’m grateful to say that I was able to attend YYGS with Daniel’s help.
So by the time college applications opened, I trusted Daniel to guide me through the admittedly-complicated process and to critique my essays. Not only did he provide auspicious feedback and give me examples of his own personal statements when I was writing my own, he also tried connecting me with friends attending colleges where I was interested in applying. He worked with me for months on end, editing my essays and making sure that I succinctly phrased my thoughts. And like most people, I was at a complete loss at some points. When that happened, Daniel asked me thought provoking questions to get my ideas on paper again. He was incredibly patient and always responded to my messages promptly. Thanks to him I'm now an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University studying chemistry and english.

From the very beginning when I sent him my first draft, his feedback was extremely detailed and beyond surface level. He identified exactly what was working in my essay and what wasn't, and he continued to push and help me polish my essay until it was perfect. It's very impressive to me how much he understands how admissions committees actually think. There were many times where I thought something worked well, but he was able to immediately flag how it could hurt my application in a way that I never would've thought of myself, and the outcome was outstanding. I must point out that I believe Dr. Berkowitz is one of few counselors that truly cares about his students. He sent me multiple follow-up emails throughout the year, and now that I've gotten to formally work with him, I simply cannot recommend anyone else other than Dr. Berkowitz. The difference between my final draft and my first draft was night and day, and I'll definitely be coming back in the future for any important piece of writing.

In fact, at the time I was pretty satisfied and apt to submit what I had, and I wasn’t expecting to receive a whole lot of feedback and have to make significant edits to my work. But to my surprise, that is exactly how it played out. Daniel not only fixed typical grammatical/wording issues with my statement of intent but went further by scrutinizing all documents to be submitted, asking very specific questions to deepen my own thought process regarding goals for the program as well as goals for myself. With his well-versed knowledge of program requirements and what makes college applications stand out, Daniel made excellent suggestions about items to add or subtract, and was diligent in continuing to fine-tune until we both agreed it was a strong and accurate representation of my background. Compared to what I had originally it was a substantial improvement, and I learned a lot in the process. With Daniel at my side, the college application process went from a daunting task looming closer and closer to a manageable and surprisingly gratifying experience. Previously I had worked with Cosmic Consulting for tutoring in various subjects, so when I reached out for assistance in the college process, they were ready to help even during the last semester of junior year, as I just started thinking about my future. Daniel was able to help me with anything and everything, starting with narrowing down my list, applying for summer programs(eventually settling on the prestigious MOSTEC program run by MIT), writing essays, editing essays, editing them again, editing them for the who knows how many times, and when my essays were finally ready, his help continued with crafting a portfolio, preparing for interviews, and applying for scholarships. But arguably more important than his vast array of expertise in the process is his patience in guiding me through the various stages of the college process.
Despite my confusion and indecisiveness, Daniel was able to easily identify precisely what I wanted to say and always had suggestions to point me in a direction that best suited me. Thanks to him, I’m now going to be attending the school of Engineering at Columbia University studying electrical engineering and computer science.

Whether it was because of multiple alums in my family, my Mom always talking about their amazing computer science program, or the US news rankings, CMU was always just instilled into my brain as the place I needed end up at. While my end goal was picture clear, I never thought about the steps that would be required to reach this goal of mine. As years went by, I never focused much on academia or had any idea how to even put together a somewhat cohesive portfolio representing myself for world-class universities to judge me on. When the common app finally opened up that fall of senior year, it hit me that I had no clue what I was actually doing. That is when I started looking for help and found Dr. Berkowitz. He single-handely revamped my entire application to another level I couldn't have even imagined.
On top of just helping me with my school specific supplemental essays, he greatly bosltered my personal info section, helped rewrite a completely new and improved personal statement, and even greatly improved my overall writing and literature abilities. When CMU decisions finally, came out, second to my parents, the first person I told this news to was Dr. Berkowitz, because without his help, I honestly would have never stood a chance in the modern hyper-competitive world of college admissions. Through his help I have now just finished my first year at Carnegie studying ECE and Electronic Music. He also helped me get into NYU, UW Madison, Rutgers Honors, and full rides to Binghamton and Stony Brook.
