Should You Use Exclamation Points in Your College Essay?

An exclamation point belongs in your college essay only when it is doing very little of the work. If a sentence already conveys your enthusiasm through what it describes, one or two exclamation points can sharpen your voice and help your essay stand out. If the exclamation point is the main thing telling the reader you are excited, it will do you more harm than good.

When Exclamation Points Weaken Your Essay

Sentences like "I have always been passionate about biology!" and "Volunteering at the food bank was an amazing experience!" share the same problem. Any applicant could have written them, and the exclamation point is the only sign of excitement in either one. Punctuation can raise the volume of a sentence, but it can't give the sentence anything specific to say.

When an admissions officer reaches a line like this, the enthusiasm reads as asserted rather than felt, and the extra emphasis makes the generic wording easier to notice. Deleting the exclamation point leaves the same sentence in a quieter form. The real fix is to rewrite it around the moment that made you feel that way, using details only you could supply.

When Exclamation Points Strengthen Your Essay

Compare those sentences with this one. "After three weeks of checking empty traps at dawn, I lifted the lid on the last one and found a spotted salamander, the first anyone had recorded at that pond in eleven years!" Swap the exclamation point for a period and the excitement survives, because the early mornings, the empty traps, and the eleven-year gap already make the stakes clear.

Here the exclamation point adds a small burst of personality to a sentence that works on its own, and the reader hears a real person telling the story. Keep it to one or two in the whole essay, placed at the moments that matter most to you, since each additional one makes the others count for less. They also fit naturally inside dialogue when you are quoting what someone actually said in the moment.

Test Every Exclamation Point Before You Submit

Find each exclamation point in your draft and reread its sentence with a period in its place. If the sentence still carries your excitement through its details, actions, or stakes, the exclamation point is doing very little work, and you can keep it as a flourish of your voice. If the sentence falls flat, the exclamation point was holding it up, and the sentence needs a rewrite built from something only you could describe.
