Caltech Supplemental Essays Guide 2026-2027
Caltech recently released its supplemental essays for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. In this article, we will explain exactly what they are looking for in responses from applicants, so you can write essays that will get you admitted there.
Before we get into the individual prompts, understand the one thing that governs all of them. Caltech is an unapologetic STEM institution, and there is no such thing as too much technical depth here. Caltech faculty read these essays, so do not dilute your science for a general audience. Lean all the way in. Caltech gives a word range for each response, and you should aim for the top of it.
Required STEM Academic Interest Question
If you had to choose an area of interest or two today, what would you choose? (Note that you are under no obligation to follow this choice if admitted.) Why did you choose your proposed area of interest? If you selected 'other', what topics are you interested in pursuing? (200 words)
This question is where your personal stakes belong, and how you handle it depends on what your Common App essay already does. If your personal essay does not give the admissions officer a strong, specific reason you want to use your education to change the world in a tangible way, this is where you provide it. Name a frontier problem in the field you want to major in, show how the consequences of that problem going unsolved have touched your life directly, and let that lived experience explain why you are compelled to solve it. That personal motivation, tied to a real-world impact an admissions officer can get behind, is what turns a list of interests into a reason to admit you.
If your personal essay already makes that case, do not repeat it here. Take one of two other routes. The first is joy: show the reader the delight you feel when you are deep inside the problems of your field, so they can see how alive this work makes you. The second is discovery: while chasing the specific change you want to make in the world, you stumbled onto particular problems, some still unsolved and some you managed to solve yourself, and those problems are what made you fall in love with the field and decide to major in it.
Whichever route you take, stay technical. Caltech faculty are reading, so the problems you name should be specific and current. Just make sure every piece of technical detail is anchored to a genuine personal reason for caring about it.
Scholarly Character
Caltech wants to see how you learn when there is no easy answer: how you work through difficulty, collaborate around hard ideas, and grow from the experience. Choose one of the two prompts below, each with a 200-word maximum.
Option 1, Collaboration: Tell us about a time your learning in STEM was shaped by another person or group — either because you needed help, offered help, changed your thinking through collaboration, or contributed to someone else's understanding. What did that experience teach you about learning and working with others? (200 words)
Pick this prompt when your best story is a genuinely shared one. Open inside the collaboration itself, and be specific and technical about the actual problem the two of you were working on, because Caltech faculty are reading and a vague description of the work will sink the essay. Then get to the two things this prompt is really testing. The first is what you learned academically from another sharp mind: a specific technical lesson, a method you had never seen, a way of framing a problem that reset how you approached it. That is what lets an admissions officer picture how much you will get out of being surrounded by brilliant peers at Caltech. The second is what you learned about learning and working alongside other people.
Do not state that second lesson the way you would answer a document-based question in history class, with a tidy sentence announcing what you took away. Show it in action instead. Take the reader to a later collaboration where you did something differently because of what the first one taught you. Letting them watch you apply the lesson proves you actually internalized it, and it shows Caltech the kind of collaborator you will be in their labs and problem sets.
Option 2, Process: Tell us about a time your approach to a STEM problem, concept, or project mattered as much as the outcome. How did you work through uncertainty or persist creatively in tackling the problem? What would you still defend about your process, regardless of the outcome? (200 words)
Pick this prompt when the story of a problem lives in how you thought about it, not in whether you got the right answer. Open in the middle of the struggle, be specific and technical about the problem so a faculty reader can follow it, and give them a front-row seat inside your head: how you broke it down, where you got stuck, what you tried next, and how you handled not knowing.
Caltech is telling you outright that the outcome is not the point, which means a problem you never fully solved can work beautifully here. The key is how you defend your process, and the strongest defense is that the process taught you something new no matter how it ended. Maybe you derived a mathematical identity you had never encountered, made a connection in physics you had never made before, or uncovered a genuine gap in your own understanding, and the problem sent you back to shore up that foundation. Show the reader that even a dead end moved your understanding forward, and you will have shown them exactly the kind of mind Caltech is built for.
Scientific Drive
Here Caltech asks how STEM comes alive for you through learning, pursuing, or making. Choose two of the three prompts below, and give each its own response with a 200-word maximum. Caltech faculty are reading, so get technical.
Option 1, Learning: Regardless of your STEM interest listed above, take this opportunity to nerd out and talk to us about whatever STEM rabbit hole you have found yourself falling into. Be as specific or broad as you would like. (200 words)
This is the classic Caltech nerd-out essay, and it should showcase how you independently pursue knowledge in an area that captivates you. Spend roughly 40 percent of your response on how you advance your own understanding of a specific topic, and the remaining 60 percent on what you actually discovered down the rabbit hole, demonstrating real technical understanding and conveying what makes those discoveries so fascinating to you. Let your enthusiasm show through the specificity of what you learned.
Option 2, Pursuing: Tell us about a STEM question, problem, idea, or project that has held your attention over time. What drew you to it, how have you pursued it, and what do you still want to understand? (200 words)
This one is about sustained engagement over time, so the arc is what matters. Here, unlike almost anywhere else in a college application, an origin story that reaches back to childhood is fair game, as long as you have genuinely stayed obsessed with the same problem and simply formulated it in more sophisticated ways as you grew. Think about the harmonic oscillator. As a kid you might be mesmerized just watching a mass bounce on a spring. Algebra lets you pin down Hooke's law and the trade-off between kinetic and potential energy, enough to see why a stiffer spring or a lighter mass oscillates faster. Calculus turns position into velocity and acceleration and reveals the signature of the motion, that the acceleration always points back toward equilibrium in proportion to how far you have strayed. Differential equations let you actually solve for that motion, handing you the clean sine wave and its frequency, and then, once you add friction or a driving force, the far richer physics of damping and resonance. Keep climbing and coupled systems bring in linear algebra and normal modes, while the tensor calculus of continuous media turns that single spring into the template for everything from the vibrations of a solid to a field built out of infinitely many oscillators, which is the mathematical heart of quantum field theory. The same question that grabbed you as a child just keeps opening up.
Whatever your problem is, keep the essay about you, not about the problem. Establish a real personal or emotional connection to it, the reason it got its hooks into you and never let go, and show how you have chased it since through concrete work: the extracurriculars, the textbooks, the research papers, the code, the experiments. Caltech asks what you still want to understand, so end on the open questions that keep pulling you back, because that lingering curiosity is what marks a genuine researcher.
Option 3, Making: Tell us about something you created, tested, repaired, modeled, coded, built, or redesigned. What problem were you trying to solve and what did the process reveal to you? (200 words)
Any time you built, designed, coded, repaired, modeled, or redesigned something, it counts, so pick one specific creation rather than cataloging several. Start with why you cared, the personal or emotional connection to the problem you were trying to solve or the thing you were trying to make, because this essay, like all of them, has to be about you and not just the artifact. Then walk the reader through your thinking and the concrete steps you took, including the assumptions you questioned that other people would not have. Caltech asks what the process revealed to you, so close on what you learned in the making, ideally something that surprised you or changed how you would approach the next build. The way you think through a creation is exactly what Caltech is looking for.
Fun Question
Caltech students bring more than academic ability to the communities they join. What is something you would be excited to do, share, teach, make, start, or contribute as part of the Caltech community? (150 words)
The emphasis is right there in the first sentence: Caltech wants the part of you that is more than academic ability. Pick one specific thing you would genuinely contribute to campus life, a hobby you would share, a club you would start, a skill you would teach, a tradition you would bring, and show it vividly in the first person rather than just naming it. Root it in a real lived experience so the reader understands why it matters to you, then make the contribution concrete by showing the other students who would be better off for it. Caltech has a tight, quirky, collaborative residential culture, so the strongest answers make it easy to picture you actively enriching that community.
Optional Academic Short Answer Question
Caltech cares about context. Is there anything about your academic preparation, coursework, school context, or learning experiences that would help us better understand your readiness for Caltech?
This one is genuinely optional, and unlike a hidden extra essay, it is a context question. Use it only if you have real context that changes how the rest of your file should be read: a school that did not offer calculus or physics, a disruption that affected your coursework, or a non-obvious way you built your STEM readiness outside of school. If you have that context, state it plainly and without excuses. If you do not, it is fine to leave it blank rather than manufacturing a weakness or repeating what already appears elsewhere in your application.
