Timeline for US Students Applying to Cambridge 2026

If you're a high school student in the United States hoping to start at Cambridge University in October 2027, the application process is already underway, and it's more complex than applying to US schools. Cambridge runs on the UK's UCAS platform, but it layers on its own earlier deadlines, subject-specific admissions tests, and a separate supplemental application called My Cambridge Application. Miss one step and you're out for the cycle.

This guide walks through every step, in order, from now through the October 2027 start date, so you know exactly what to do and when.

What Makes Cambridge Different for US Students

Before diving into the timeline, it helps to understand a few rules that are unique to Cambridge and that will shape all of your planning.

You can only apply to one Cambridge course per year, and you cannot apply to both Cambridge and Oxford in the same cycle. That means your course and college choices carry enormous weight, you get one shot.

Cambridge accepts US students on the strength of AP scores, SAT or ACT scores, and GPA. For most science courses and Economics, Cambridge expects an SAT of at least 1500 with a Math score of 750 or higher, or an ACT of at least 33. For other courses, the thresholds are somewhat lower. Critically, your scores must be within approximately two years of your October 2027 matriculation date, so if your scores are older than that, you'll need to retest.

Cambridge also uses subject-specific admissions tests that vary depending on your course. Some of these require pre-registration weeks in advance. Getting the wrong test (or missing registration) is a common and devastating mistake for international applicants.

March and April 2026: Lock In Your Course and Test Track

The first thing to do right now is confirm which course you're applying to and determine which admissions test, if any, it requires. Cambridge uses four different pre-registration tests depending on the subject area, and each has its own registration window and test date.

If you're applying to Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, or Veterinary Medicine, you will need to take the ESAT. For Engineering specifically, Cambridge specifies that the ESAT covers Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics.

If you're applying to Computer Science, Economics, or Mathematics, you will need to take the TMUA. Computer Science applicants who apply to Peterhouse or Trinity College should also be prepared for the CSAT, which is an additional test administered after shortlisting, you'll be invited to take it, so there's nothing to pre-register for, but you need to know it exists.

If you're applying to Law, you will need to take the LNAT.

If you're applying to Medicine or Graduate Medicine, you will need to take the UCAT, which has its own separate and earlier booking window beginning in late June.

For every other course, including Architecture, Design, Classics, English, History, Geography, HSPS, Economics, Modern and Medieval Languages, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy, Theology, Archaeology, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, History of Art, History and Politics, History and Modern Languages, Education, Psychological and Behavioural Sciences, Environment Law and Economics, and Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic, there is no pre-registration test. Instead, some colleges may administer their own assessments, and Cambridge has said it will confirm those arrangements in April 2026. Check back then.

Also in April, Cambridge and the testing authority UAT-UK are expected to publish the registration windows and test dates for the ESAT and TMUA for the 2027 entry cycle. Do not assume these are the same as previous years. Treat the dates as unknown until they are officially announced, and watch the Cambridge admissions testing page closely throughout April.

On April 28, 2026, the 2027-entry courses will become visible in the UCAS search tool. Use that as your signal to finalize your course code selection before building your UCAS application.

May 2026: UCAS Opens — Start Building Your Application

On May 12, 2026, UCAS opens for 2027-entry applications. You can begin filling in your application immediately, even though the submission window doesn't open until September. Use this runway wisely.

Start drafting your personal statement. Cambridge's personal statement expectations are academically rigorous, they want to see genuine intellectual engagement with your subject, not a list of activities. Your referee (typically your school counselor or a teacher) will also need time to write a strong reference and submit your predicted grades, so get them involved early.

Also in May, Cambridge has indicated it will update its English language requirements for interview — particularly relevant if English is not your first language. Check the Cambridge course pages in May to confirm what, if anything, has changed.

June and July 2026: Medicine Applicants — Book Your UCAT Now

If you are applying to Medicine (A100) or Graduate Medicine, UCAT booking opens on June 23, 2026. Testing begins July 13, 2026. This test cannot be deferred, retaken in the same cycle, or sat after the September deadline. The absolute last day to sit the UCAT for Cambridge 2027 entry is September 24, 2026. If you need access arrangements, the deadline for those is September 10, 2026.

Book your UCAT slot as early as possible in the June to July window. Do not leave this for August.

August 2026: Law Applicants — LNAT Registration Opens

If you are applying to Law, LNAT registration opens on August 1, 2026. Testing starts September 1, 2026. You must sit the LNAT within the current UCAS application year, and you can only sit it once per cycle. Cambridge will publish its specific LNAT deadline on the LNAT official site — check there for the exact date that applies to your Cambridge application.

September and Early October 2026: Submit Everything

September 1, 2026 is when UCAS officially opens for submission. For Cambridge applicants, do not wait. Your UCAS deadline is October 15, 2026 at 6pm UK time. That translates to 1pm Eastern or 10am Pacific, plan accordingly.

Between September and early October, you should also be sitting your pre-registration admissions test if your course requires one. Once the ESAT and TMUA registration windows open (dates to be confirmed in April 2026), register immediately and choose a test center. These tests are offered at authorized centers globally, including in the United States.

If you are applying to Architecture or Design, you will need to prepare a pre-interview artwork PDF, no more than six A4 pages, under 15MB. which you will submit before your interview. Start preparing this portfolio material well before the October deadline.

For courses that require written work. including English, History, Classics, Modern and Medieval Languages, History and Politics, HSPS, Theology, Archaeology, Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic, Education, and others, your college will tell you when and how to submit. Some require two pieces of written work; some allow EPQ essays. The deadlines are set by individual colleges and typically fall in late October or November, but you should have this material drafted well before October 15 so you're not scrambling after submitting UCAS.

October 15, 2026 (6pm UK Time): UCAS Deadline

This is the single most important deadline in the Cambridge application process. Every application for Cambridge 2027 entry must be submitted through UCAS by 6pm UK time on October 15, 2026. There are no exceptions and no extensions.

Graduate Medicine applicants also have an additional Cambridge-specific form due on this date.

October 15–22, 2026: My Cambridge Application

Within approximately 48 hours of submitting your UCAS application, Cambridge will send you an email with a link to My Cambridge Application, a supplemental portal where Cambridge collects additional information beyond your UCAS form. Most applicants must complete this by October 22, 2026 at 6pm UK time.

You will also need to upload your high school transcript through this portal. Requesting official transcripts from your school can take several weeks, do not leave this until the last moment. Request your transcript well before October 15 so it is ready to upload as soon as My Cambridge Application becomes available.

Late October and November 2026: Written Work, Portfolios, and Shortlisting

If your course requires written work or portfolio materials, your college will contact you with submission instructions after you submit your UCAS and My Cambridge Application. The deadlines vary by college and course, so watch your email closely during this period.

Shortlisting outcomes begin in November. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to interview. If you are applying to Computer Science at Peterhouse or Trinity College and are shortlisted, you will also receive an invitation to sit the CSAT at this stage.

December 7–18, 2026: Interviews

The main Cambridge interview window runs from December 7 to December 18, 2026. Interviews are typically conducted online for international applicants. Some courses and colleges may also run college-arranged assessments during this window. Architecture and Design applicants should be prepared to show their portfolio during the interview itself.

If your application is placed in the winter pool, a mechanism Cambridge uses to ensure strong applicants receive offers even if their original college didn't have space, pool interviews may extend into January.

January 27, 2027: Decision Day

Cambridge releases decisions on January 27, 2027. You will receive a notification through the UCAS Hub and by email. Offers may be conditional (meaning you still need to meet certain exam score requirements) or unconditional (meaning your place is confirmed).

If you receive an offer, you will respond through UCAS by their reply deadline. If your offer is conditional, your most important task from this point forward is meeting those conditions.

May and June 2027: Final Exams and Condition-Clearing

For most US applicants, Cambridge offer conditions will center on AP exam scores. AP exams are taken in May, which aligns well with Cambridge's August results deadline.

If you have received an offer to study Mathematics, your offer will almost certainly include a condition tied to STEP, the Sixth Term Examination Paper, taken in June. This exam is exclusively used by Cambridge (and a small number of other universities) and requires dedicated preparation. Registration for STEP is arranged through your school or exam center.

August 31, 2027: Exam Results Deadline

Cambridge must receive your final exam results by August 31, 2027 in order to confirm your place for October 2027 entry. Make sure your scores are sent in time. If you are waiting on a remark, contact Cambridge immediately, they have guidance for managing that scenario.
